Public Health View on Pulmonary Tuberculosis of University Students

Abstract
The study on scholastic fulfillment and infective effects of tuberculosis student was carried out upon 69 cases of tuberculosis student that has been detected out o¢æ 18,315 students enrolled during 5 year period from 1969 to 1973 in Chonnam University.
The followings were results obtained
1. Average annual tuberculosis incidence rate was 0.37%, and prevalence rate was. laid between 2.3 to 1.0%, the trend of prevalence rate was in gradual downward.
2. Among 69 cases, 18 (26.1%) were detected through annual periodical X-ray check, and 24 (34.8%) were by clinic visit with subjective complaints, and 27(39. 1%) was detected through entrance physical examination. Most of the cases (75. 3%) were enlisted in the T. B. control program of the university within: 2 years after admitted to the school. Extent of disease at detection was 84.1% for minimal, 14.5% for moderate and 1.4% for far advanced, restectively, and prognosis at the end of observation was 13. 1% for arrested, 59.4% for improved, 2.9% for deteriorated, and 24.6% for not changed.
3. In colleges of law and teachers, the result was shown that high average annual incidence but good improvement after control, on the contrary, in colleges of technology and art & science shown that low incidence but poor improvement in prognosis.
4. General improvement together with arrested and improved was 72.5%. In minimal cases, the ratio of improvement was 72.4% and they spent 2 years. to get good result more than improved in last case of them, on the other hand, in moderate cases, the ratio of improvement was, better than minimal, 80.0% but they spent 3 years to get such a good result in last case of them.
5. Comparing the possible ability of scholastic fulfillment of tuberculosis student to that of non-tuberculosis, no handicaps were observed. If school health provide good tuberculosis control program, tuberculosis in university or college student would not be top problem any more.
